An Internet Opinion String For The Ages.
Our team'll view only exactly how this exercises for games on Apple TELEVISION, however that could only result in a better encounter for folks which wish to download and install an activity and afterwards begin playing that. Computer game hardly get humour right, as well as activities that are actually generally regarding firing scarcely even approach that. Yet No person Lives For life went kinky boots-first right into the planet from 1960s spy shows, as Kate Archer protected the globe against scary, corny, maniacal hopeful despots. This internet browser software program for Nintendo DS is a version of the Opera internet browser for logging onto the net along with the WiFi-enabled Nintendo DS. Operate that individually-- or even better yet-- integrate that with your existing advertising and also hiring tools (CRM, social networking sites computerization, and so on). They might realize that by embracing Open Social they will allow competitors and also might shun this for that reason. You'll participate in through a variety of battles in each phase from the major initiative which views your group squaring off from a team of baddies that leads up to a supervisor fight. Mac computer OS X support is actually accessible on the Crystal clear download internet site, and also Linux vehicle drivers are easily found in location including SourceForge.
Customization enables players to specify themselves in the social world so that they can easily depict on their own by means of images, it additionally allows them produce a cool/trendy character that allows all of them to show rather than inform. You can easily always put in each and test out their download/upload rates along with the totally free app. Although the task still exists, it made very little progression, as well as was actually essentially doomed when Google.com just recently killed off its Social Graph API Appropriately or mistakenly, the task was actually viewed as Google's effort to take on Facebook( s fb)-- but its attempts have considering that been pleased to promoting its personal Google+ network (which actually still does not have a fully accessible API of its own).
Tumblr media
Social news is actually a warm place as well as it has been actually for rather some time, with well-liked start-ups featuring Flipboard, Pulse and a large number of others vying for that sought after spot on your iPhone or even apple ipad residence screen. You would certainly expect to observe a great deal of sequels in the graphes to build on previous excellence if the free2play games are so much exciting to participate in. For much more than a year, many viewers have actually speculated that Trump has actually made use of an Android phone for tweets he sends themselves-- you know, the tweets that name from the media out as fake news" or even charge a former head of state from 'cable utilizing.'" The additional universal tweets-- from the view me on Fox Headlines" wide array-- are actually predominately tweeted coming from an apple iphone, which some have hypothesized are actually handled through Trump's staff. These human-alien hybrid youngsters are also impacted through an effective quantum computer system built through experts coming from a decrypted alien code. So if www.fitnesswelt-de.com/ are certainly not making use of social networks to increase your label, market your product or services in a refined way at that point you are actually certainly not making use of all the ammo the digital planet has delivered you with. Once he receives those birds in space, he'll likely deal with many of the very same obstacles as various other satellite companies. The only decent yardstick to use in chargeding a World wide web client resides in their data transfer capacity. A little bit of embellishment may be actually FINE, however stretch the truth also much, warns Samantha Von Sperling, director of Sleek Social Graphic Consultants, and also you'll put your reputation in danger. Much more studies off App Data, checking out the top ten games based on the number of regular active consumers (DAU), handled the February 26th. Which is one thing from an overlooked possibility as much of the games on offer provide an incredibly playable adventure that consists of all the components we expect from modern portable games. TrackerBlock also erases various other files, like Flash biscuits, that monitoring business could leave on your personal computer. You will come off as an individual using a bullhorn if you alleviate social networking like social media. Researches reveal that the internet has actually ended up being a vital site for reducing solitude, solitude and various other oppressive indicators. The only way to get any sort of net at all is actually a Verizon plane pack cell hotspot which functions penalty provided that you don't receive any crazy tips like streaming motion pictures in 4k or maybe normal 480p. Certainly not simply carries out the FCC's proposition claim that broadband providers carry out factors they don't, this professes that they do not carry out traits that they perform! And when a horror strike rocks the Country's capital city from Bonton, Orwell is actually instantly put to the test. Everything from the special fast-paced platforming to the remarkable techno soundtrack: each of the Sonic activities was actually an expertise a creation from gamers will never ever most likely forget, and there is actually still absolutely nothing like that (till Venture Needlemouse possibly?). Similar to organizations leveraged World wide web 1.0 by producing electronic stores and offering rise to ecommerce, folks around the globe are currently finding out the best ways to take advantage of the astonishing power inherent in the LINK to produce what is practically an identical cosmos of electronic identities. At that point these comprehensive cloud solutions are actually worth an appeal to go together with the options created right into your Operating System from choice, if you mostly catch to one computer system. Stepping into the breach is Social Indigenous, a firm with a clean $8 million in loan as well as a well-pedigreed exec staff that is actually intending to provide companies a method to make use of social graphics and messaging as an extra helpful advertising and marketing network. This will not be actually as quick as the potential speed of your service provider's 4G possibility, but it might end up being much faster than the actual velocity of that 4G system in certain scenarios.

Input/Konzert: Till Kniola/Konrad Kraft
Tumblr media

Annotated Bibliography
Spark, A. 2016. Andi Spark – Pursuing the Animatrix: Musings on Defining a Term to Describe Woman-Centered Animation – Animation Studies. [Online]. [Accessed 25 October 2019]. Available from: https://journal.animationstudies.org/andi-spark-pursuing-the-animatrix-musings-on-defining-a-term-to-describe-woman-centered-animation/.
The writer grabs the topic of “female workers in animation” to describe the changes that have happened over the years. Up till the day this was written, woman were able to gather some significant roles (mainly going for storyboard artists, and some for animators), but most of the self found conceptions still apply, studios would still choose a man over a woman for a creative roll. For me, as a woman in the field, this kind of exclusion is not understandable. Woman can be as creative as man, and the only explanation provided is that woman tend to bring their own feelings for animation, while man do the most creative out of the box ideas.
Herhuth, E. (2019). Eric Herhuth – The Animated Will: Intelligent Movement and Embodied Intentionality in Character Animation. – Animation Studies. [Online]. [Accessed 22 Oct. 2019]. Available from: https://journal.animationstudies.org/eric-herhuth-the-animated-will-intelligent-movement-and-embodied-intentionality-in-character-animation/
During his journal entry, the author explains the importance and evolution of the technic for the character’s will. The was used to show that a character could do any actions without thinking, that it was free to choose whatever it was meant to do, nonetheless, it was only an illusory freedom (or as he would call it “insincere promise of freedom”), as the choices that they go though have been meed previously made. Personally reading this text was really important for me since I tend to concentrate on character performance, posing, movement and acting takes a great part in this relationship with the creation of freedom.
Martin, B., Yecies, B. (2004). First Monday: Peer-reviewed Journal on the Internet, [online] 9(6). Available at: https://documents.uow.edu.au/~bmartin/pubs/04firstmonday.html [Accessed 28 Oct. 2019].
This journal entry shows a variety of titles a corporation may have to battle while climbing the ladder to success, and analyses the variety of changes the company itself had to grow from, especially with the rise of the internet and NET communication technology. The author goes through an analysis to understand each site’s reason to take an anti-Disney approach and question each of them creating a table of sites, reasons, goals, methods and their strategies. I feel lithe this article is a good approach for everyone to understand what a rising company such as Disney can go through the years, while they gain more fame, their actions will be more criticized and noticed, so more and more of this sites will appear. It’s good to understand that any animator might be on their shoes one of these days.
Berney, S. (2016). Does animation enhance learning? A meta-analysis. Computers & Education, [online] 101, pp.150-167. Available at: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0360131516301336?via%3Dihub [Accessed 25 Nov. 2019].
The author took this journal to analyse whenever would be easier to learn from graphics or animated videos. They tested both methods in various forms consecutively with different studies, such as pure animation, animation with sound and animation with no explanatory text, they grew in results substantially, understanding that the most efficient method would be the animation with sound a no explanatory text. This induct to a transition of the media, that implies great research in the animation field, with more development, this kind of animation could bust the way people study. This topic was particularly interesting from my point of view since I can give more time of my attention to video lessons other than reading, this method could prove really useful in various fields of study.
Telotte, J. (2019). Letting Go: Representation, Presentation, and Disney’s Art of Animation. Animation, [online] 14(2), pp.132-148. Available at: https://doi-org.ezproxy.herts.ac.uk/10.1177/1746847719858159 [Accessed 18 Nov. 2019].
This article shows how Walt Disney was able to present both sides of animation while developing his drawing to tv, he made a series of behind the scenes so he would be able to let people understand when and how their favourite films were being made. This was a way to show various differences in the animation studied by the studio, as for example, from the realistic style Pinocchio (1940) to a more fantasy/cartoony one as in Lady and the Tramp (1955). This source was relevant from the point of evolution, as a person and a company leader, how to develop a whole variety of shows that appeal to your work and are able to demonstrate your development.
Neuman, R. (2019). Disney’s Final Package Film: The Making and Marketing of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949). Animation, [online] 14(2), pp.149-163. Available at: https://doi-org.ezproxy.herts.ac.uk/10.1177/1746847719858678 [Accessed 21 Nov. 2019].
During this journal, it is analysed the conception of the film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad (1949), how it was developed even in times of war, how it took eight years to assemble and how the conjunction of two different origin stories gave birth to this final script. A great point made by the author is that film shows the division they had in subtle ways, like for example having one character more cartoony and other more realistic. Unfortunately, this movie wasn't a big hit for Disney but was good for many experimentations and answers. I particularly like this journal entry as a form of making movies as a research method, a way of understanding the public needs and likes, and as a proof that no matter how much a movie can fail, it does not mean the next one will follow the same path.
Death and Coping Mechanisms in Animated Disney Movies: A Content Analysis of Disney Films (1937–2003) and Disney/Pixar Films (2003–2016). (2019). The Psychosocial Implications of Disney Movies, [online] pp.17-30. Available at: https://doi.org/10.3390/books978-3-03897-849-7 [Accessed 29 Nov. 2019].
During this chapter, the author decided to examine how Disney has portraited death over the years, what were the differences from the old traditional movies to the newer versions, and how children are dealing with the concept of death transmitted by it. It’s referred that some stories are supposed to help the children deal and learn the state of grief. During the studies, it was noticeable that protagonists were the ones who die the most, and that normally it had negative emotion embed with the feeling (and was unjustified), while when an antagonist died it was a positive emotion (and was justified). In a personal analysis, the recent movies made the grief make more sense, and developing the stages of character and having it pass the same stages of grief is something that, in my opinion, will help children understand such a complicated topic.
Pluralsight (2014). Animation for Games vs Animation for Movies. [online] Pluralsight.com.  Available at: https://www.pluralsight.com/blog/film-games/how-animation-for-games-is-different-from-animation-for-movies [Accessed 1 Dec. 2019].
In this article, it was pointed out the main differences between working as an animator for movies or for the games industries. The author argues that while movies only have to worry about the shot they're working at, and have a wider amount of time to develop it, relying mostly in acting, in games, the industry demands good and fast animation, it needs to be ready for every camera angle (since it’s interactively based) and relies mostly in character performance and body mechanics. This was a great article for me as since the beginning of this course I was trying to explain what I pretended to do, this helped me decide that developing character performance and acting is my main focus.
Neistadt, W. (2018). From School to Studio: Sir Wade Neistadt’s Journey to DreamWorks Animation. [online] Animation Mentor Blog. Available at: https://blog.animationmentor.com/from-school-to-studio-sir-wade-neistadts-journey-to-dreamworks-animation/ [Accessed 3 Dec. 2019].
During this blog post, the author explains his own experience developing himself to enter the world of an animator’s career. From starting in a subject he didn't enjoy, to learning what animation could bring to his life until he learned of an online animator’s school, this opened his eyes for software and prepared him for future opportunities. He started in a studio, but not directly as an animator, he does believe that being inside the studio and getting to know people is already a major first step. This blog was a major help for me, as I was lost in whatever way a student could even be able to approach or even enter a studio by himself.
Barnes, B. and Sperling, N. (2019). Why the ‘Joker’ Movie Was a Risk Warner Bros. Wanted to Take. New York Times, [online] p.1. Available at: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/03/movies/joker-movie.html [Accessed 10 Dec. 2019].
This newspaper article main focus point was how everyone, including some Warner Bros. employees were worried how the film would be received by the audience. Since it tackled such violent issues and gave the main character a “reason” to justify his action, they worried it could have a negative impact on the already occurring disasters. The author says that “This was a risk Warner Bros. wanted to take” and I totally agree, as films should not be considered documentaries of real life, but imaginary worlds we create to live their stories, making that separation was what made this topic so important, it was a risk worth taking.

REDO: quick plisetski facts.
i know i posted that before, but due to some requesting something more stable and accurate && my own decisions and re-shapes, i decided to redo some facts about the trash-son till i will finish a biography page fully written out.
alexandru plisetski was born on an artificial satellite of uranus, with the name of carminae ( estimated to be around 10,130,000 km2 ) around the year of 3720. the state was formed by what was milleniums before eastern europe and western asia, plisetski being born into the region ( classify ‘region’ as something close to what crete is within greece )  known as chernaya zemlya ( ru: ‘black earth’ ), and thus being ethnically white / caucasian, his family’s roots being mainly romanian.
he was born to patriarch  ( this word is meant to signiffy the RELIGION RELATED TERM. for more info look here ) patriarch petru of chernaya zemplya [ by his original name, anatol plisetski ] and  eugenia plisetskaya, a movie director and actress. beside him, his parents had other children, plisetski’s twin sister ana, and his younger siblings dmitri and sergiu.
he has manifested what his parents thought was autism, but rather it was just an unusual intelligence. he has been classified as genius level intellectual and a century-shaping mind at the age of 13. then, doctors also classified him as a being above human and classified him as a telepath.
at age 15, graduated from university and with a master’s degree in psychology. there he met a engineering student at the same age as him, denis sperling. they formed a friendship that as years passed has gone beyond being platonic.
his sister got married to prince eduard zubov into the same ceremony that plisetski married his margarita dostoevkaya, both being at at the age of 16.  two years later, plisetski welcomes his children adina && ion  into the world. his niece princess elena was born one year after her cousins.
due to the clashes in between the regions forming carminae, the country was plagued bu civil wars for freedom and independence of the ethnic groups populating it. he joined the allied forces of the rebellion and became the leader of what was called unit 0067.
the unit was formed of teenage convicts who fought alongside the rebels to be returned to their countries. plisetski has been alongside the unit for four years, until the death of 16 years olds petrul paraschiței and ivan borsiov made him leave the service and become an intelligence agent.
once into the cri he was attacked by ptsd which resulted into him realizing his powers went beyond telepathy. he started being thrown into different alternatives of reality and he would still return home and everyone would not notice absence.  he reunited with sperling and has joined the department of agents with powers beyond understanding, the epsilon squad. when his involvment with the rebellion went public, his children and wife were killed.
the squad’s mission was to kill the members of the zubov family, overthrowing the monarchy letting each separate ethnic group have it’s independence. this included plisetki’s own sister and nice being killed by plistetski’s team-mates.
after the mission was completed, and plisetski’s returned to his life, he has been crowned king of the newly-formed country of chernaya zemlya. then his powers simply manifested way beyond his control, him developing the ability to change the course of events just by thinking about it and altering reality to the point where he would be  the being who is holding reality together.
since then he has been on and off thrown into different dimensions and times, his staus as a being beyond living into a single reality allowing him to change the order of events so he’ll exist in every alternation of his dimension or reality, including your muse’s world probably.

How To Name Your Art Work Organisation.
The Ultimate Dealing With Champion (UFC) used to become absolutely nothing more than a below ground combating league, and also one which was actually barely allowed in the United States. That was actually, till Dana White came along. If you are everything like me, the last time you made note from how you can create a formal resignation character, was years back, thus right here is actually a basic clean layout that you can easily make use of to direct you when prepping your letter of discontinuation of employment. Regrettably that appears merely everybody with over 5 moments of downtime created his very own amyblog-slimbody.info listing of pink shades and the very same title is used on other (and even on the same) checklists for totally different hues from possibly the most controversial member from the shade tire. One cause might be just what I describe as a filthy little trick:" specifically, inventories in the iShares S&P FIVE HUNDRED Growth fund (NYSEARCA: IVW) don't actually grow incomes appreciably much faster than sells in the iShares S&P FIVE HUNDRED Worth fund (NYSEARCA: IVE )-- they are actually just extra costly! I thought this was crucial making this point considering that you have written a center concerning the beginnings of the white nationality which seems to be to focus greatly on the function from white people in slavery, which seems to be truly unfair as well as unjustifiably injurious to me as well as serves to bolster the common notion of white guilt which is largely unjustified. Furman is actually presently assistant to the head of state for financial policy and principal replacement director from the White House National Economic Council (NEC), which is actually run by Genetics Sperling, and was actually a business analyst in the Clinton management. Although others were actually spotted in the 1800s, the very first white colored tiger to be recorded and used to breed others was named Mohan, found in India in 1951 by Maharaja Martand Singh, the final leader from the Indian state of Rewa. Committed to handling and advertising local area rap acts, Simmons ' initial productive act was in pairing his bro Joey, a developing rap artist understood due to the label of Reverend Jog, along with pair of other rappers to develop the team Run-DMC. This offers me great happiness whenever i listen to the label Dr.Zabaza since he is actually the terrific man that reinforce my relationship especially when my aficionado had to do with leaving me for yet another woman yet with the help from Dr.Zabaza my aficionado altered his thoughts and also today our company are actually gotten married to all with the help of Dr.Zabaza i am actually thoroughly happy to him and i will prefer to distribute his connect with details to those who believe they will truly need his aid as well as the details are +2348182620374 or zabazalogan @.
Tumblr media
An additional considerable contention is actually that a root illustration from the terrible, sadistic habits and also bestial conduct illustrated by particular participants of the white fatherlike southern community during slavery, could be found in one key Freudian idea, 'The Thanatos' or the fatality impulse.

These 2017 Hires Show That Legal Tech Is Growing Up
Tumblr media
I like to say that I was writing about legal tech before it wasn’t cool. Chortle.
When I started writing about legal technology, it certainly was not as popular as it is now. David Lat encouraged me to disregard traffic numbers when it came to legal tech (there used to be a noticeable dip). He thought technology’s impact on legal was an important story whether or not folks were paying attention.
But legal tech is growing up right in front of our eyes — case in point: my list of notable legal tech hires in 2017. Hires don’t have the eye-grabbing attention of funding rounds or acquisitions, but they’re an important way to assess where an industry is headed.
Doug Hebenthal, Chief Technology Officer, Axiom. Axiom announced that they had hired Doug back in October. Even if Doug wasn’t a seasoned tech industry vet who spent time at, among others, Microsoft, Amazon, and Change Healthcare, this would still be a significant hire. Till now, Axiom didn’t have a CTO position. As I’ve detailed before on these pages, Axiom’s go-to-market strategy was a really well-branded legal staffing agency, even as the bigger vision was to industrialize legal services. Over time, Axiom embedded its lawyers inside of Fortune 500 law departments, and the company has leveraged that position to begin building technology-powered solutions for their customers. The hiring of new CEO Elena Donio, a tech industry vet in her own right, and her installation of the CTO position is part of the transition from staffing agency to high-level technology consulting, a sort of SAP or Oracle for the legal industry. And while this hire is specific to Axiom, some of the traditional alternative legal service providers are moving from a pure service model to a service/technology hybrid. Which brings us to…
Alma Assay, Chief Innovation Officer, Integreon. Okay, this isn’t exactly a hire because Integreon acquired Alma’s company Allegory, but this deal was more of what you would call an “acqui-hire” (although Integreon certainly plans on leveraging Allegory’s technology, not just their team). A lot of reasons this deal is significant, including the trend I mentioned above of ALSPs embracing technology as part of their offering, but I think there’s a more important takeaway: the risk of leaving Biglaw to start a legal startup may not be as risky as you think. Alma built the company without huge institutional funding, continued getting customers, and iterating on her product offering. In a perfect world, I’m sure Alma would have wanted to grow Allegory as a standalone company that scaled to hundreds of millions in annual revenue. Most startups (and certainly legal startups) will not sell for hundreds of millions of dollars, and almost every startup has to contend with a imperfect world. Lawyers with big ideas who I speak to are already pointing to Alma as an example of why perceived risk is greater than actual risk. The more lawyers take note of Allegory’s trajectory, the more lawyers will leave law to start legal start-ups.
Scott Sperling, VP of Sales, ROSS Intelligence. I’ve heard anecdotally that legal tech startups in NYC and Silicon Valley cannot convince the top sales people (the Jan-the-Mans of the world) to come work in legal tech. Top sales people want to work at Salesforce and Microsoft, not in legal. Now, I don’t know many faster growing companies than WeWork, so the fact that ROSS got Sperling, who was Head of Sales at WeWork, to come on board is kind of mind-blowing. Andrew Arruda is as charismatic and persuasive as they come, but getting Sperling to join ROSS is a great signal for an industry that hasn’t always been able to attract the top talent. It wasn’t just ROSS either; Logikcull hired VP Finance Evan Meagher away from SigFig and Ironclad hired Jen Pau from Salesforce to be their COO. This will continue being a trend as legal software morphs into enterprise software that happens to be designed for legal departments.
Margo Smith, Chief Legal Officer, Apttus. It’s hard to call Apttus a purely legal tech solution, but their contract lifecycle management solution is designed to overhaul how sales and legal interact, and many of the top consulting firms are implementing Apttus inside of major organizations. Now why is it important whether or not Apttus is a legal tech company and what has this got to do with Smith, a former Wilson Sonsini attorney who was in-house with Marketo for the last four years? When I spoke with Smith earlier this year and asked her if was she was brought on to help Apttus go public, she of course wouldn’t comment. But Apttus just raised a $55 million Series E round of funding that you might as well call a pre-IPO round. Apttus should hit the public markets valued in the billions of dollars, a first for a Silicon Valley-based “legal tech” company… of course that’s only if Apttus is a legal tech company.
So if these hires are representative, 2018 and beyond should see more of the following: (1) services providers embracing (and acquiring) technology solutions, (2) more lawyers leaving law to launch legal startups, (3) top Silicon Valley talent joining legal tech companies, and (4) more legal tech companies going public at billion dollar plus valuations.
Now the fun part — what 2017 legal tech hires did I miss? Email me and let me know. Want to follow the conversations that I publish with legal tech thought leaders? Drop in your email below.

Article from WSJ: A Surprising Way to Stay Resilient
Reminding yourself what you’re grateful for can boost your mental health and help you cope with coronavirus stress

By Elizabeth Bernstein
As a lifelong athlete and former pro basketball player, David Gardner has always focused on his health, being careful to eat right, drink a lot of water, get enough sleep and stay active.
But since the pandemic started, he’s added another healthy habit: Reminding himself why he’s grateful.
When Mr. Gardner starts to feel frustrated or annoyed these days—that he can’t meet with his employees in person, take a trip, or see a friend—he interrupts his thoughts with a question: “What is the gift in this situation?”
“Focusing on the positive helps me better absorb the negative,” says Mr. Gardner, a 37-year-old owner of a branding firm in Chicago.
It is an important strategy, especially now. Reminding ourselves what we’re grateful for is one of the most powerful ways we can boost what mental-health experts call the psychological immune system. Researchers use the concept to describe a set of emotional processes that help protect our mental health, just as the physiological immune system aims to safeguard our physical health. A strong psychological immune system keeps us mentally resilient.
Many things we do to strengthen our physical immune system also support us mentally, such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep and finding time for pleasurable activities in our day. Typically, our psychological immune system kicks in naturally, although it is sometimes compromised in people who suffer from depression or another mental illness, who have low self-esteem, or who ruminate a lot, mental-health experts say. But right now, as we’re battered with coronavirus stress, it’s important we all try to actively strengthen it.
“Our psychological immune system is like a cellphone battery—we drain it more quickly in a crisis because we use it more,” says Jacqueline Sperling, a psychologist and director of training and research at the McLean Anxiety Mastery Program at McLean Hospital in Cambridge, Mass. “So it’s important to continue to recharge it.”
To boost it, we need to take active steps to regulate our emotions, says Elizabeth Pinel, a professor in the department of psychological science at the University of Vermont. Experts recommend focusing on what you can control. Acknowledge that life is tough right now, and don’t beat yourself up for feeling bad.
Challenge negative thoughts, asking yourself if they are true. Reframe them in a way that is more positive and helpful. (Replace “I hate not seeing my friends and family” with “I look forward to seeing my loved ones eventually.”) Calm yourself through breathing exercises. Be mindful—pay attention to the present moment.
Research shows that gratitude is a huge psychological booster. Studies show that people who practice being grateful report significantly higher levels of happiness and psychological well-being than those who do not. They are less depressed—with fewer, and shorter, episodes—and have lower levels of stress hormones and reduced cellular aging. They sleep better. They have more success at work. And they have better relationships.

Robert Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, says gratitude is not a feeling that can be willed easily. But performing grateful motions, such as saying thank you, can help trigger real gratitude. PHOTO: UC DAVIS NEWS AND MEDIA RELATIONS
The best way to start practicing gratitude is to keep a journal to identify things in your life for which you are grateful each day, says Robert Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, and a leading researcher on gratitude. Refer to them as gifts, which will underscore their importance as something positive. And take the time to truly reflect. “Don’t hurry through this exercise as if it were just another item on your to-do list,” he says. “Be aware of your feelings and how you relish and savor each gift.”
Feelings of gratitude activate three main areas in the brain: the brain stem region that produces dopamine, the primary reward chemical; the reward center, where dopamine is released; and the anterior cingulate cortex, which helps us focus on information that is relevant and communicates between the brain’s thinking and emotional circuits, says Alex Korb, a neuroscientist. “Your psychological well-being depends less on the things that happen to you and more on the things you pay attention to,” says Dr. Korb, author of “The Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression, One Small Change at a Time.” “Gratitude will shift your brain’s attention.”
It is a perfect coping skill for the Covid-19 era, when so much of life feels out of control. Gratitude gives us something we can change: our thoughts. We don’t need good things to happen to us to be grateful, we need to reframe our thoughts about what has happened. Think of the Irving Berlin song, “Count Your Blessings.” Mr. Berlin wrote it after his doctor recommended that he try counting his blessings as a way to deal with his stress-induced insomnia, according to Benjamin Sears, editor of “The Irving Berlin Reader.”
Sherry Belul, 55 years old, an author and life coach in San Francisco, credits gratitude with helping her get over a depression years ago. She writes “love lists,” cataloging the qualities she appreciates in people. She makes recordings of things she’s grateful for—a song that makes her smile or a bird outside her window. She writes thank you letters to strangers, such as favorite authors or store clerks who were helpful. And she practices something she calls “reappreciation”—she thanks people for something she has already thanked them for, such as a present or a piece of advice. “I learned that when I am in a state of gratitude—and literally writing it out—there is no way to be depressed,” she says.

Stephanie Freeman says gratitude has helped her cope with family tragedy and job stress resulting from the pandemic. “Gratitude makes me realize that things are not nearly as bad as I made them out to be initially,” she says. PHOTO: DERRICK YELLOCK
Stephanie Freeman, a 50-year-old humanities professor in Raleigh, N.C., turned to gratitude two years ago after her husband and father both became critically ill, and the stress made her sick. “My doctor said if I wanted to get better I needed to strengthen my mindset,” she says. So she learned to try to stop her negative thoughts immediately and focus on the good in the situation.
It is tougher now, during the pandemic. Three family members have died of Covid-19. Her husband lost his job as a software support technician. She has more work, training colleagues to teach online. And the couple’s refrigerator and washing machine broke. But Dr. Freeman keeps at it, reminding herself she is grateful for her job, her savings, the credit card that allowed her to buy a new fridge, and the fact that her husband is now healthy. “Gratitude makes me realize that things are not nearly as bad as I made them out to be initially,” she says.
Mr. Gardner helps to keep his psychological immune system healthy by writing in a journal twice a day. He leaves it open on his desk and makes entries before he starts work in the morning and when he turns off his computer at night. Each time, he follows a series of five writing prompts, posed as questions, including, “What is your big task for the day?” “What is your 90-day goal?” “What was your big win?” “What lessons did you learn?”
But one question is more important than all the others, and so he starts and ends his day with it: “What are you grateful for?” Sometimes his answers are simple: sunshine, a bird chirping or a long walk. But often his answers are bigger: the slower pace of life, quality time with his wife, the baby the couple is expecting.
“There is a lot of change coming our way and that can be disorienting and knock people off course,” Mr. Gardner says. “Gratitude makes me resilient.”
How to be Grateful
Prepare yourself. Spend time in nature. Listen to relaxing music. Slow down and pay attention to your surroundings. You need to start in the right frame of mind, says Elizabeth Pinel, a psychology professor at the University of Vermont. “Gratitude can’t be forced.”
Keep a gratitude journal. Write down things you are grateful for each day. Think of them as gifts. Reflect on your feelings and the depth of your gratitude. “Writing things down helps you focus on the details and makes the feeling more tangible,” says Robert Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, and author of “Gratitude Works!: A 21-Day Program for Creating Emotional Prosperity.”
Give back. Find ways to use your strengths and talents to help others. “We become more grateful when we become a giver rather than a receiver,” Dr. Emmons says.
Think about the bad. Recalling the worst times in your life can make you grateful you made it through, grateful for what you learned in the process and how it made you stronger, and grateful, hopefully, that things aren’t as bad now.
Go through the motions. Gratitude is an attitude, not a feeling that can easily be willed, Dr. Emmons says. But by performing grateful motions, you may be able to trigger real gratitude. Smile. Say thank you. Fake it till you make it.
Watch your language. Grateful people use thankful words: gifts, blessings, fortune, abundance. “Less-grateful people are preoccupied with burdens, curses, deprivations and complaints and their words reflect this focus,” Dr. Emmons says. Tell yourself you “get to do this” rather than you “have to do this.”
Practice the three S’s. Be open to surprise each day; surprise amplifies positive feelings. Be specific—dwell on the concrete ways in which you are supported and sustained by other people. Pay attention to scarcity. Is there a benefit or silver lining to the current situation that you will not have in the future?
Write a letter. It feels good to make someone else feel good. But research shows that even if you don’t send the letter you will benefit because you have strengthened the brain’s gratitude circuitry and activated the region of the brain that produces dopamine.
Say thank you. A lot. Especially to the people you’re living with right now. It will make you both feel better.
Take action. This may help you focus on your positive feelings longer. Take a photo. Seek out experiences that make you feel grateful. “By taking action, we are telling our brain this matters,” says Alex Korb, a neuroscientist. “And then that feeling gets highlighted by the brain’s circuitry, instead of floating away like a random thought.”
Think of happy memories. This increases the production of serotonin, a feel-good neurotransmitter, in the brain, Dr. Korb says.
Focus on the future. Think of the reunions. Imagine how good it will feel to eat at your favorite restaurant or get back to your favorite hobby. This will help prevent you from taking things for granted in the future.

“Postal Order Thief Goes to Penitentiary,” Toronto Star. November 4, 1931. Page 2. ---- Baird Atkinson, ‘Man of Many Aliases,’ Posed as Postal Inspector ---- Baird Atkinson, described by Postal Superintendent Gibson, as ‘a man of so many aliases, that his true name was only discovered with the greatest difficulty,’ was sent to Kingston Penitentiary for five years, on each of two counts, ‘forging and uttering’ and ‘theft,’ in police court to-day.
Atkinson, after a chase which commenced in Dunbarton and Brooklin, Ontario villages, and extended to Toronto, Montreal, and Windsor, was finally arrested in the latter city. He stated that his ingenious series of thefts had been suggested by an article in an American detective magazine.
Postal Superintendent Gibson described how the accused had cards printed bearing the legend, ‘James C. Judd, Inspector of Postal Services, Ottawa.’ Armed with these ‘credentials’ he had visited Dunbarton and Brooklin post-offices. At the former place he stole five blank post-office money orders, and a the latter a book of 200, of cash value $20,000.
The five he stamped with the local postal stamp while carrying out his ‘inspection,’ the latter he stamped with a special rubber stamp, he had made in Montreal. Some 15 money orders only were recovered when the accused was arrested. Some of the proceeds he had, spent on diamond rings for a girl, and some he had deposited in Toronto and Montreal banks.
Eric Armour, K.C., for the crown, asked an exemplary sentence pointing out the minimum was two years and the maximum seven years.
‘He is wanted by the American and Canadian customs as well,’ supplemented Superintendent Gibson.
‘Why did you buy the diamond rings?’ asked the beach. ‘I only gave them to her to keep for me,’ replied accused.
‘Where is your wife?’ ‘In Rochester, sir.’
‘Why did you not send her money?’ ‘I had no time.’
‘He deserted his wife and four children some time ago,’ supplemented the crown. ‘They are now being supported by the welfare bureau in Montreal.’
‘Sneak Thief’ to Reformatory Edward Currie and Donald Anderson, alias Wallace, the latter similarly charged a day or so ago, pleaded not guilty to stealing an overcoat from a departmental store. Anderson had a record; Currie a clean sheet.
‘Anderson, I gave you the benefit of the doubt when you were up here a day or so ago,’ the bench said. ‘You seem to be a regular sneak thief. You will go to Ontario reformatory for four months with six months indeterminate.’
Currie was placed on probation for two years.
Harold B. Sperling, charged with receiving, was remanded till Nov. 6, bail $1,000.
Kevin Huntley, convicted of automobile theft, was ordered returned to St. John’s Industrial; school.
‘See you behave,’ admonished the bench. ‘If you come back I will send you to the reformatory.’
Had Lottery Tickets; Fined Norman Rusk, arrested in a pool room, with a pocket full of lottery tickets, was fined $20 or 30 days.
Counsel Austin Ross described Tony Bonomo as a ‘catspaw for someone else’ when he sought a remand for his client.
‘Why?’ asked the bench. ‘There is a slot machine involved in this, it is most intricate,’ replied counsel. The bench granted a remand till Nov. 6.
Story Found True Yesterday J. Arnold Smit, charged with ‘stealing a ride,’ was remanded to ascertain the bona fides of his story that he was hastening to the bedside of his dying mother.
‘I find your mother is seriously ill,’ said Magistrate Tinker to-day.
‘You will be remanded for sentence, and the Salvation Army will see you on your way.’
Richard O’Hara and Peter Kinyon were fined $50 or three and two months, respectively, for being drunk.
Another inebriate was said to be taking treatments for diabetes and the bench, remanding him for sentence, remarked he ought to know better than to pump alcohol into his system.
Bertel Sabini, who risked his life by trespassing on the C.N.R. tracks, while ‘under the influence,’ was fined $10 and costs or 30 days. The remainder of a list of nine drunks were remanded for sentence.
James Morin, charged with vagrancy, was at the request of the police ordered held till November 10, bail $200, for further inquiries.
Louis Mendoza, charged with obtaining goods, valued at $27.25 from James Ivory by fraud, said he paid with a post-dated cheque and was now ready to pay part in cash. The cheque came back marked no funds. The charge was withdrawn.
Magistrate Browne discharged B. Bickan and Joseph Libman, each charged with fraud on four counts. His worship held that the crown had produced no evidence that could justify a conviction. Accused were alleged to have taken money from foreigners in return for obtaining them jobs which failed to materialize.
‘I used to be a roomer at the home of this lad when I was a student, and I respect his parents; I do not expect a fee,’ said counsel for Eadie Boyle, charged with theft, and after Magistrate Browne had asked where the boy who could not pay $15 for a radio set, but obtained money for his counsel’s fee.
The bench placed the accused on probation for a year and ordered him to pay the $15 at the earliest date possible.
John Kadlo was sent to the reformatory for a year plus a year indeterminate for stealing $104 at a wine party from a man who he had invited to be present. The complainant accompanied Officers Murchison and McCaffrey on a tour of inspection and spotted the accused on the street. Inspection revealed the money in his possession.
Douglas C. Scott pleaded guilty to stealing $1000, which he had paid back prior to his appearance in court, and was placed on probation. He accepted the money in payment for a truck and failed to deliver the machine.
’Let this be a lesson to you,’ admonished the bench, ‘try not to be so crooked in future; be straight in your dealings.’
[AL: Atkinson was 38 at time of conviction, born in Selby, Ontario, also went as John Robert Allen - his most popular pseudonym - and was also sentenced and charged in Whitby for his expansive operation. He was convict #2422 at Kingston Penitentiary, but was transferred in July 1932 to the Collin’s Bay prison camp and then paroled in May 1935. He came back to Kingston in 1936.]

Harriet Tubman $20 Bill Is Delayed Until Trump Leaves Office, Mnuchin Says
Currently, The 7th U.S. President Andrew Jackson, a populist hero who owned slaves, has appeared on the $20 bill since 1928. Should he be replaced on the bill by Harriet Tubman, who was born into slavery, escaped and then returned to the South, where she led other slaves to freedom, and a Union scout during the Civil War and later advocated women’s voting rights: (1) Yes, (2) No? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
Harriet Tubman — former slave, abolitionist, “conductor” on the Underground Railroad — will not become the face of the $20 bill until after President Trump leaves office, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday.
Plans to unveil the Tubman bill in 2020, an Obama administration initiative, would be postponed until at least 2026, Mr. Mnuchin said, and the bill itself would not likely be in circulation until 2028.
Until then, bills with former President Andrew Jackson’s face will continue to pour out of A.T.M.s and fill Americans’ wallets.
Mr. Mnuchin, concerned that the president might create an uproar by canceling the new bill altogether, was eager to delay its redesign until Mr. Trump was out of office, some senior Treasury Department officials have said. As a presidential candidate in 2016, Mr. Trump criticized the Obama administration’s plans for the bill.
That April, Mr. Trump called the change “pure political correctness” and suggested that Tubman, whom he praised, could be added to a far less common denomination, like the $2 bill. “Andrew Jackson had a great history, and I think it’s very rough when you take somebody off the bill,” Mr. Trump said at the time.
Mr. Trump has frequently described Jackson, whose portrait hangs in the Oval Office, as a populist hero who reminds him of himself. Two months into his presidency, Mr. Trump stopped to lay a wreath at Jackson’s tomb at the Hermitage, his plantation in Nashville. “It was during the Revolution that Jackson first confronted and defied an arrogant elite,” Mr. Trump told a crowd gathered there. “Does that sound familiar?”
The delay comes three years after Mr. Mnuchin’s predecessor, Jacob J. Lew, announced plans for a sweeping and symbolic redrawing of the currency that would see Tubman replace the slaveholding Jackson on the face of the note.
Treasury Department officials did not say whether Mr. Trump had a hand in the decision, and Mr. Mnuchin would not say whether he himself believes that Tubman should be on the bill’s face. “I’ve made no decision as it relates to that,” Mr. Mnuchin said Wednesday at a congressional hearing in response to a question from Representative Ayanna S. Pressley, Democrat of Massachusetts.
During the hearing, Mr. Mnuchin said that he was now focused on enhancing the anti-counterfeiting security features of the currency, focusing first on the $10 and $50 bills. Designing new imagery is on the back burner.
“It is my responsibility now to focus on what is the issue of counterfeiting and the security features,” Mr. Mnuchin said. “The ultimate decision on the redesign will most likely be another secretary down the road.”
Replacing Jackson with Tubman was both filled with symbolism and marred by controversy.
Tubman was born into slavery, escaped and then returned to the South, where she led other slaves to freedom. She was a Union scout during the Civil War and later advocated women’s voting rights. Jackson orchestrated the removal of Native Americans from lands to the east of the Mississippi River and sent them marching west on the so-called Trail of Tears.
In 2017, speculation began that Mr. Trump might scrap Mr. Lew’s plan for the $20 bill when mentions of it were scrubbed from the Treasury Department’s website during a redesign.
Then, that August, Mr. Mnuchin made clear that Tubman’s future on the bill was in doubt.
“People have been on the bills for a long period of time,” he told CNBC. “This is something we’ll consider. Right now, we’ve got a lot more important issues to focus on.”
Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Democrat of New Hampshire, recently introduced the Harriet Tubman Tribute Act and called on the Treasury Department to offer clarity on the status of the $20 bill. The legislation, if passed, would direct the department to place the likeness of Tubman on $20 Federal Reserve notes printed after Dec. 31, 2020.
“There is no excuse for the administration’s failure to make this redesign a priority,” Ms. Shaheen said. “Sadly, this delay sends an unmistakable message to women and girls, and communities of color, who were promised they’d see Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill.”
Supporters of the tribute act in the House — including Representatives Elijah E. Cummings, Democrat of Maryland, and John Katko, Republican of New York — also expressed frustration with the Trump administration over the delay.
“The administration’s decision to drag their feet and delay the redesign of the $20 until 2028 is unacceptable,” Mr. Cummings said in a statement. “Our currency must reflect the important role women, and especially women of color, have played in our nation’s history.”
Former Obama administration officials have been quiet about Tubman during the past two years, hopeful that Mr. Trump would forget about the plan and allow it to proceed.
Mr. Lew, through a spokeswoman, had no comment on Wednesday. But Gene Sperling, the former director of President Barack Obama’s National Economic Council, assailed Mr. Mnuchin on Twitter for embracing Mr. Trump’s divisiveness.
“Today Mnuchin pathetically announces that Tubman on $20 will be delayed till 2028 — meaning their goal is never,” he tweeted.
Women have appeared on United States currency a handful of times, often on seldom-used $1 coins. In the 19th century, Pocahontas and Martha Washington were the first women to make it onto American currency — and the last to make it onto paper.
Pocahontas appeared among a group of men on the $10 bill and the $20 bill in the late 19th century. Washington was on $1 silver certificates in 1886, 1891 and 1896.
The suffragist Susan B. Anthony was the first woman to appear on an American coin: a dollar produced from 1979-81 and again, briefly, in 1999. But originally, the Treasury Department planned to depict the allegorical Lady Liberty. It was not until legislators and activists objected that the department agreed to honor a real-life woman.
In 2015, Mr. Lew started a 10-month process to develop a plan that was initially intended to honor a female historical figure on the $10 bill, replacing Alexander Hamilton. After much controversy, consternation and public debate — in part because of the popularity of the musical “Hamilton,” which is based on the secretary’s life — Mr. Lew changed course and instead made plans for a vignette of suffragists to be put on the back of the $10 and for Tubman to become the face of the $20 bill.
On Wednesday, activists from the group Women on 20s, which helped push Tubman to the prominence of the $20 bill, were disappointed but hopeful that the delay would avoid meddling from Mr. Trump.
“At Women On 20s, we’re not surprised that Secretary Mnuchin may be kicking the design reveal of the $20 bill to sometime beyond the potential interference of a Trump presidency,” the group said in a statement calling on Congress to pass legislation to add Tubman to the currency. “As we’ve been saying for years, symbols do matter.”
